The purpose of the sprinkler system is to add moisture to the soil in small amounts, during dry conditions. This added water keeps the soil moist, benefiting several things : house foundation, trees, shrubs, grass and flowers.
For the homeowner:
Look at your sprinkler system controller-usually on the garage outside wall. If you do not have a operation guide, then google the make and model. From the content page we will look at several items.

3. Walk out in the yard and look at how each station operates.
Good = good spray pattern on all heads.
Bad. = (a) low or uneven spray pattern. (b) spray pattern hits house or street.
Ugly. = (a) excess water running from broken heads or pipe.
(b) nothing happens, station does not operate.
Write down what you see. This information can be given to a licensed irrigator .
The TCEQ states that sprinkler system repairs are to be done a licensed irrigator. ( LI )
